"COMMON GROUND" OLYMPIC LOUNGE | Fall 2017
OBJECTIVE
The goal of this project was to design a space where athletes from across the world could come together and relax between events at the Olympics held in Pyeungchang, South Korea.
CONCEPT
The 2018 Olympic logo "Cheon-Ji-In" symbolizes heaven, earth, humanity in harmony. It inspired a design that employs age-old design elements that cross geographic and cultural boundaries, such as hearths, symmetry, the post and lintel and, of course, an appreciation for the natural world.
SOLUTION
People relax with that which is familiar., and symmetry is familiar pattern in most cultures due to its origin in the natural world. Arranging a variety of seating options symmetrically around a central with snack area directly behind opens the opportunity for engagement. On either side of the space are smaller areas and computer amenities for solo or small group interaction. Natural elements are found throughout in finishes and in views.
